As an interesting note: When Esther became President of the Stanford chapter of SIGMA XI, she was curious about how member dues were spent. Esther examined this question and found that the previous President had used the members' fees to purchase expensive wines and share these with his cronies. Esther instead used the member dues to pay travel expenses and provide refreshment for notable researchers who came to give professional talks.
